The Blue Man Group originated in the late 1980s with eight men covering their faces with cerulean masks and a tomb containing a variety of decade signets. This “Funeral for the 80s” would initiate the group’s birth, as the performers involved lit the items on fire. While most original members took diverging paths, Phil Stanton, Chris Wink, and Matt Goldman would become the group’s most unwavering members.
They synchronized additional street performances that examined similar pop-culture themes, earning notoriety throughout Manhattan. Eventually, the trio extended their acts to hole-in-the-wall theaters. The group expanded in 1991 to include an understudy performer who could mime, drum, and communicate the group’s core archetypes of innocence, heroism, shaman, trickster, group member, and scientist.
The Blue Man Group became an explosive pop-culture success throughout the 90s, releasing original studio albums that garnered heightened demand.
